Homemade Chai Tea Latte

Homemade Chai Tea Latte: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

The first time I tried a chai tea latte was when a popular coffee and donut shop sent me a coupon to try it for free. I am not a fan of tea, hot or cold, I just have never gotten used to the taste. However, I do love my lattes and it was free so I decided to give it a try. I was absolutely shocked at how much I loved it. Since that first drink, I've had it a few more times at different places, with some being better than others.

One day after a very chilly and early morning race I knew I needed some form of hot coffee. I decided to try a coffee shop I've never been to and felt like a chai tea latte. I asked the barista about adding an extra shot as I typically do when I am extra tired and at a coffee shop. Then to my surprise she said that it has no coffee in it, but could made it a dirty chai tea latte and add a shot of espresso. I had just assumed since it was a latte it had coffee in it. The barista said most people think that, but the tea has caffeine in it and it is called a latte because of the milk added. Well I learned something new that day.

Then shortly after that I started looking for recipes to make a chai tea latte at home. The biggest problem I ran into was all of the recipes called for whole spices, not ground. But I really did not want to buy whole spices which I do not typically use just for this latte. So I kept looking and looking then I found recipes for an instant mix that used powdered milk and powdered instant tea. But again it was using ingredients I don't typically use. So I kept on looking until I finally found one that used mostly powdered ingredients and I substitute some whole for ground. The result was a drink that was so heavy in spices, I could not drink it. So the search continued and two more failed recipes. I then quit. I had tried 3 different recipes with no luck, I was done.

Then one day I decided to try again. I was going to make this drink at home and make it taste good. Bound and determined I searched again and found a recipe that had really good potential. So I figured one more try would not hurt and thankfully this fourth try was the winner. I could actually drink this entire chai tea latte and would make it again.

So, if you are a fan of the chai tea latte, give this homemade version a try and save yourself a trip to the coffee shop.

Homemade Chai Tea Latte

Ingredients:

Chai Tea

  • 2 cups water
  • pinch ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 2 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 2 black tea bags

Latte

  • 1/2 cup chai tea
  • 3 tablespoons half and half
  • fat free milk, enough to equal 3/4 cup when added to the half and half
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

Cooking Directions

Chai Tea

  1. In a medium sized saucepan, whisk the water and spices together. Bring the mixture to a boil, whisking occasionally. Once the mixture comes to a boil, turn off the heat and allow the spices to steep in the water for 5 minutes.
  2. After 5 minutes, turn the heat back on and add the maple syrup and tea bags. Bring the mixture to a slight boil, then turn off the heat. Allow the tea bags to steep in the water and spices for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags and pour the chai tea through a fine mesh strainer. Reserve 1/2 cup for the latte and pour the rest into a container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks for more chai tea latte's.

Latte

  1. In a medium sized saucepan, stir together the half and half and milk mixture and maple syrup. Bring the mixture to a slight boil, just until the sides begin to bubble. Remove the pan from the heat and use an immersion blender to blend the milk mixture until frothy. Or transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until frothy.
  2. Pour the reserved 1/2 cup chai tea into a mug and slowly pour the warm frothy milk mixture over top.
Enjoy!!!

Notes:
You can use whole milk instead of the half and half/fat free milk mixture.

Before using the refrigerated chai tea, shake it well and strain through a fine mesh strainer.

Easy Chai Tea Latte

Easy Chai Tea Latte: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

I recently had a co-worker give me some chai tea bags and even though I do not like tea, I like chai tea lattes. I figured I could use these tea bags to make an easy version of my Homemade Chai Tea Latte. A version that I can make for a quick warm me up drink. It turned out exactly as I had hoped, it was quick and easy and tasted almost like my homemade one.

Easy Chai Tea Latte

Ingredients:

  • 1 chai tea bag
  • 1/2 cup hot boiling water
  • 3 tablespoons half and half
  • 9 tablespoons milk, about
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

Directions:

  1. Place the tea bag in a mug and pour the boiling water over the tea bag and let steep for 3-5 minutes.
  2. Place the half and half into a glass measuring cup and add enough milk to make 3/4 cup. Stir in the maple syrup. Heat in the microwave until the milk is hot, but not boiling.
  3. Remove the measuring glass from the microwave and use a frother to froth the milk, if desired.
  4. Once the tea bag is done steeping, remove it from the mug and pour the milk into the mug.
Enjoy!!!

Notes:
I used my Keurig to pour the hot water over the tea bag.

I did not froth the milk in the picture above.

Chai White Hot Chocolate

Chai White Hot Chocolate: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

I am not a tea drinker. I have tried various teas, hot and cold, and I am just not a fan, with the exception of chai tea latte. It probably has something to do with the addition of the milk with the tea that makes me enjoy and it is not just straight tea. Whatever the reason is, I have been enjoying using chai tea in various drinks. Click here to check out some of my other chai tea recipes.

This chai tea drink combines white hot chocolate and chai tea for a warm, cozy and relaxing winter drink. To make this drink a bit more decadent you can top it with some whipped cream and a dash of ground cinnamon.

Chai White Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

Chai White Hot Chocolate

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 ounces good quality white chocolate, chopped
  • 1 chai tea bag

Optional Toppings

  • whipped cream
  • ground cinnamon

Directions:

  1. In a small saucepan, over medium-low heat, heat the milk to a simmer. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  2. Place the tea bag into the milk and allow to steep for 2 minutes. Press the tea bag between a spoon and the pot to wring out any liquid and dispose of the tea bag.
  3. Return the pot to the stove and add in the white chocolate. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring often, until the chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth.
  4. Pour the mixture into a mug and top with whipped cream and cinnamon if desired.
Enjoy!!!

Notes:
Nutritional info does not include whipped cream and cinnamon.

Dirty Chai Tea Latte

Dirty Chai Tea Latte: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

I have to admit something, when I first heard about chai tea lattes and tried them I assumed latte meant they had coffee in them. One day after a race I really needed a big pick me up and asked the barista to add an extra shot to my chai tea latte. She informed me that there is no coffee in it, but the tea has some caffeine. Then told me she could make me a dirty chai tea with a shot of espresso. It was delicious and had the caffeine I desperately needed. It may have taken me a lot of years to finally make my own version at home, but I am so glad I did.

Easy Chai Tea Latte

Ingredients:

  • 1 chai tea bag
  • 1/2 cup hot boiling water
  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 3 tablespoons half and half
  • 9 tablespoons milk, about
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

Directions:

  1. Place the tea bag in a mug and pour the boiling water over the tea bag and let steep for 3-5 minutes.
  2. Place the half and half into a glass measuring cup and add enough milk to make 3/4 cup. Stir in the maple syrup. Heat in the microwave until the milk is hot, but not boiling.
  3. Remove the measuring glass from the microwave and use a frother to froth the milk, if desired.
  4. Once the tea bag is done steeping, remove it from the mug, pour in the coffee followed by the milk.
Enjoy!!!

Apple Chai Oatmeal

Apple Chai Oatmeal: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

I have a love hate relationship with chai tea. I do not like tea, but I really like chai tea latte's. I have tried various chai tea recipes and non of them have tasted good, that is until now. This oatmeal had the right amount of spices to taste like chai tea, without being too overpowering.

Apple Chai Oatmeal

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground clove
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1-2 tablespoons applesauce

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl whisk together the clove, cardamon, allspice, cinnamon and ginger.
  2. In a small saucepan, add in the milk and 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of the chai mix. Heat over high heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture starts to boil.
  3. Once the mixture starts to boil, reduce the heat to medium-high and stir in the oats. Cook, stirring often, until the oatmeal thickens and oats are soft, about 5-8 minutes.
  4. Remove from the heat and transfer to a bowl and top with applesauce.
Enjoy!!!
