Cheesy Broccoli Bake

Broccoli is a favorite vegetable in our house. Add some cheese to that broccoli and most everyone will come back for more. The bonus of  the cheese sauce is that it is homemade with real cheese, no processed cheese here.

Cheesy Broccoli Bake: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

Cheesy Broccoli Bake

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions:

  1. Add an inch of water to a large pot and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Add in the broccoli florets and cover the pot. Reduce the heat to medium and let cook for 5-6 minutes, until the broccoli is bright green and can be pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain the broccoli and transfer to a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread into an even layer.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350º F.
  5. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Whisk in the flour.
  6. Add in the milk a little bit at a time, whisking constantly until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Heat whisking constantly until the milk has warmed, about 1-2 minutes.
  7. Add in the mustard powder and 6 ounces of the shredded cheese. Whisk constantly until the cheese has completely melted and the mixture has thickened.
  8. Pour the cheese sauce over the broccoli, coating the broccoli evenly. Sprinkle the remaining 2 ounces of cheese over top.
  9. Bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese on top has melted and the dish is heated through.
Enjoy!!!
