Tater tots are such a comfort food for me. Anytime I see a recipe involving them I always give it a look. There is a saying "Everything taste better with bacon.". Well, I am starting to think the same thing about tater tots, everything taste better with tater tots. I have used tater tots in many casseroles and they always make the casserole better.
This casserole includes ingredients for making homemade sloppy joe's. It uses simple ingredients, that you probably have in your kitchen right now. However, if you already have a favorite sloppy joe recipe you could use that instead or you could even use the dry mix or can mix.
Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole
Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 cup finely diced yellow onion
- 14 ounces no salt added tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 32 ounce bag frozen tater tots
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350º F. Spray a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a large skillet cook the ground turkey and onion until the turkey is completely cooked and crumbled and onion is soft.
- Add in the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce and mustard, stirring to mix everything together.
- Cover the skillet and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Top the meat mixture with half of the cheese followed by the tater tots.
- Sprinkle the tater tots with the remaining cheese.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly and the tater tots are browned.
