Southern Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Southern Baked Macaroni and Cheese: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

Have you ever been on a hunt for something, but can't seem to find it despite attempting so many times? My youngest loves mac and cheese, I mean absolutely loves it. She could eat it everyday for the rest of her life and be happy, as long as she has some sausage to go with it. I have tried recipe after recipe and she likes them, but I have get to get a love from one of them. Hopefully one of these days I will find one she loves, but for now I will take like and her going back for seconds.

Southern Baked Macaroni and Cheese: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

Mac and cheese is such a comfort dish and this creamy and cheesy version hits the spot. A homemade cheese sauce may take a bit longer to prepare, but the result is so worth it.

Southern Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups uncooked elbow pasta
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 6 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 16 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 325º F. Spray a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a large pot cook the pasta according to the package directions, but cook 1-2 minutes less than al dente. Drain well.
  3. In another large pot, over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour, and continue to whisk for 2 minutes. Whisk in the black pepper and paprika.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk and heavy cream while whisking constantly. Add in 3 cups of shredded cheese and continue to whisk until the cheese has melted and sauce has thickened.
  5. Add the cooked and drained pasta to the cheese sauce and stir until well mixed.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheese on top.
  7. Bake, uncovered, for 25 minutes or until the cheese on top is completely melted and browned.
  8. Allow the macaroni and cheese to sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Enjoy!!!
