Berry Cream Cheese Coffee Cake: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

Coffee cake with a layer of creamy cream cheese and preserves. Topped with an almond crumb. To say this is delicious is an understatement. How could it not be delicious with cream cheese and preserves in a coffee cake!?

I choose raspberry preserves for this coffee cake, but you could use strawberry or really any kind of preserves. Preserves do not have seeds in them and that makes it ideal for this recipe.

Berry Cream Cheese Coffee Cake

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup raspberry preserves
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350º F. Grease and flour the bottom and sides of a 9 or 10 inch springform pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and sugar.
  3. Add the butter to the bowl and cut in with a pastry blender until it resemble coarse sand.
  4. Remove 1 cup of the crumb mixture and place into a small bowl. Add in the almonds and stir to combine. Set aside for the topping.
  5. To the remaining mixture in the bowl, add in the baking powder, baking soda, sour cream, egg and almond extract, mixing until well blended.
  6. Spread the batter over the bottom and up 2 inches of the sides of the prepared pan. Batter should be 1/4 inch thick on the sides. 
  7. In a medium bowl, beat together the cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar and egg until well mixed.
  8. Pour the cream cheese mixture over the batter in the pan.
  9. Carefully spread the preserves over the cream cheese mixture.
  10. Sprinkle the almond crumb mixture over top of the preserves.
  11. Bake for 55 minutes or until the filling is set.
  12. Allow to cool in the pan for 15 minutes.
  13. Remove the sides of the pan and serve warm or allow to completely cool.
  14. Refrigerate any leftovers.
