We eat a lot of ground turkey, in fact any time I come across a recipe that calls for ground beef I substitute it with ground turkey. With this chili there was no need to substitute, because it already called for ground turkey.
The original title called it spicy turkey chili. While it definitely had a little bit of a spicy bite, it was not super spicy. It was nice and flavorful though.
Turkey Chili
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 jalapeño, finely diced
- 6 ounces tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- pinch cayenne pepper
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 15 ounce can low sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
- 2-14.5 ounce cans diced tomatoes
- 2-3 cups low sodium chicken broth
- 2 ounces (1/2 cup) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Directions:
- In a large pot, over medium-high heat, heat the oil. Add in the onions and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add in the jalapeño, cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds. Add in the tomato paste, chili powder, cumin and cayenne pepper, cook stirring constantly for 1 minute.
- Add in the ground turkey and cook, stirring and breaking it up until it is cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the beans and diced tomatoes. Add in 2 cups chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a simmer and simmer for 25 minutes. While simmering add in more chicken broth to reach your desired chili consistency.
- Serve and top each serving with shredded cheese.
Enjoy!!!
