This recipe has been adapted from a chicken restaurant in Nashville called Hattie B's Hot Chicken. I have never heard of that restaurant, but then again I don't live near Nashville.
From a quick search, I found that the sandwich is made with a piece of spicy chicken, where this recipe is shredded chicken. I love this shredded version, it is so easy and has a the kind of spiciness to it that makes my nose runs, but is flavorful, not just hot and spicy. The ranch dressing helps to cut the heat a little bit and the pickles add crunch and more flavor.
I am so glad that there are food bloggers out there sharing their take on restaurant favorites. Otherwise I never would have had the chance to enjoy this spicy and delicious sandwich.
Crock Pot Nashville Hot Chicken
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 2-4 tablespoons cayenne pepper (see notes)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 3/4 cup low sodium chicken broth
- 8 hamburger buns
- ranch dressing
- dill pickle slices
Directions:
- Add the chicken to a crock pot.
- Whisk together the remaining ingredients until well mixed. Pour over the chicken.
- Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 4-6 hours.
- Remove the chicken and shred. Return the chicken to the crock pot and stir to coat in the sauce.
- Serve the chicken on hamburger buns topped with ranch dressing and dill pickles.
Notes:
I used 3 rounded tablespoons in this chicken and it had a nice spicy flavor. Start with 1 or 2 tablespoons and taste the sauce before adding to the crock pot. Add more cayenne pepper to make spicier.
My sauce was a little runny after cooking, so I left the lid off for about 30 minutes, while still on low and it thickened up.
