Before Pinterest was around and blogs were a thing, I had figured out how to make mozzarella sticks at home and baked not fried. I thought I had written down the recipe, but recently I went looking for it and could not find it. I really wanted to make them so I worked to create the recipe again.
I have no idea how close this recipe is to the original one I created since it was so long ago that I had created them, but I do know they tasted delicious and I will definitely be making them again. But now I will not lose the recipe or think I wrote it down but didn't thanks to this blog.
Baked Mozzarella Sticks
Ingredients:
- 12 mozzarella sticks
- 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 2/3 cup panko
- 1 1/4 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- cooking spray
Directions:
- Unwrap the cheese sticks and place on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Place the baking sheet in the freezer for at least 3-4 hours.
- In a shallow bowl place the flour.
- In another shallow bowl lightly whisk the 2 eggs and water together.
- In yet another shallow bowl mix together the breadcrumbs, panko, Italian seasoning and garlic powder.
- Remove 3 cheese sticks from the freezer and coat them in the flour. Then coat them with egg, letting excess drip off. Place them in the breadcrumb mixture and coat well pressing down to help the breadcrumbs stick.
- Then dip the cheese sticks in the egg and breadcrumb mixture again. You want to do this process as quick as possible to prevent the cheese sticks from getting to warm.
- Return those 3 to the freezer and get out 3 more to coat. Repeat this process until all of the cheese sticks have been coated.
- Allow to freeze for at least 2 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 400º F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and coat with cooking spray.
- Place the frozen cheese sticks on the prepared baking sheet about 1 inch apart. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray.
- Bake for 5- 8 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Turn the mozzarella sticks over and lightly spray with cooking spray. Bake again for 5-8 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Watch the mozzarella sticks carefully so the cheese does not become to melted.
