This french toast puffs up little bit, like a soufflé. Hence the name French Toast Soufflé. It is also creamy, because of the cream cheese and half and half and has a nice maple flavor. To make this french toast even better, you prepare it the night before and just have to bake it the next morning.
French Toast Soufflé
Ingredients:
- 1 loaf french bread
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 8 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 2/3 cups half and half
- 1 1/4 cups maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
Directions:
- Grease a 9x13 baking dish.
- Cut the loaf of bread into 1 inch cubes and place into the prepared baking dish.
- In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the milk, half and half, 1/2 cup maple syrup and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture evenly over the bread. Cover the pan and refrigerate overnight.
- Remove the pan from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile preheat the oven to 350º F.
- Bake the french toast uncovered for 50 minutes, or until an inserted knife in the center comes out clean.
- Pour the remaining 3/4 cup maple syrup over the french toast soufflé and then sprinkle the powdered sugar over top.
