French Toast Sandwich

French Toast Sandwich: Savory Sweet and Satsifying

In the town where I used to live there was a restaurant, named Bennigan's, that had this sandwich called the Monte Cristo. This sandwich was so delicious, yet probably so unhealthy. Here is how Bennigan's describes that sandwich: Honey wheat bread layered with tender ham, roasted turkey, Swiss and American cheese. Batter-dipped, gently fried and coated with powdered sugar. Served with red raspberry preserves for dipping.

I decided that I was going to try and make this sandwich at home and attempt to cook it on a griddle instead of deep frying it. The sandwich worked on the griddle, but it really did not taste like the deep fried restaurant one, it tasted more like french toast. However, it was delicious and one I will make again, so I renamed the sandwich, to fit with how it tastes.

French Toast Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 4 slices wheat bread
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 2 tablespoon light mayonnaise
  • 1/2 pound sliced ham
  • 1/2 pound sliced turkey
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat the griddle.
  2. In a large shallow dish, one big enough to fit a sandwich, beat the eggs. Set aside.
  3. Spread 1 tablespoon mustard on two slices of bread.
  4. Spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on two slices of bread.
  5. Divide the meats and cheeses between the two slices of bread with mustard.
  6. Top with the slice of bread that has mayonnaise on it. Lightly press down on the sandwich.
  7. Place the sandwiches in the beaten eggs, one at a time, and turn to coat.
  8. Place on preheated griddle and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until cheese has melted and bread has browned to your liking.
Enjoy!!!
