Turkey, Chorizo and Beer Sloppy Joes

Turkey, Chorizo and Beer Sloppy Joes: Savory Sweet and Satisying

I love chorizo! Once I discovered this delicious and spicy meat, I am always on the look out for recipe to use it in.

These Sloppy Joes are a great use for chorizo. Since chorizo is spicy I used half chorizo and half ground turkey. If ground turkey is not your choice of meat, ground beef would also work. Add some diced jalapeños for a bit more heat and some beer for even more flavor.

I made these Sloppy Joes thinking my girls would not eat them. Between the spiciness and the beer I felt they would take a taste and choose to eat leftover. To my surprise, they liked them. Now they definitely are not their favorite Sloppy Joes, they like "plain" ones better, but they did eat an entire sloppy joe. Surprisingly my youngest did not find them that spicy and neither really tasted any beer flavor, not that they know what beer tastes like, but the flavor it provided to these Sloppy Joes did not bother them.

Take your Sloppy Joes to the next level and give these a try!

Turkey, Chorizo and Beer Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • olive oil
  • 3/4 pound ground turkey
  • 3/4 pound ground chorizo
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup blonde ale beer
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • couple dashes hot sauce
  • couple dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • black pepper, to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns

Directions:

  1. In a large skillet, add the butter and a drizzle of olive oil and heat over medium-high heat.
  2. Once the butter has melted, add in the ground turkey and chorizo. Cook and crumble until completely cooked, drain.
  3. Add the onions and jalapeños to the skillet and reduce the heat to medium. Sauté for 2 minutes or until the onions and jalapeños have softened. Add in the garlic and sauté for an additional minute.
  4. Pour in the beer and scrape up any browned bits on the bottom of the skillet. Allow the beer to cook for about 30 seconds.
  5. Add in the ketchup, brown sugar, chili powder, mustard powder, cayenne pepper, hot sauce and black pepper. Stir to combine everything well and bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Cover, reduce the heat to a simmer and allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Add in additional beer if the liquid is evaporating too quickly.
  8. Serve on buns.
Enjoy!!!
