Trés Leche French Toast

Trés Leche French Toast: Savory Sweet and Satisfying

I still have yet to make a trés leche cake, let alone eat one. It is on my list of things to make, but with over 400 dessert pins on my Pinterest board, I always find a dessert that I want to make more. So for now I am happy with making other recipes involving trés leche, like this french toast. This was probably the best french toast I have made. It was rich, creamy and just all around delicious.

Now let's talk about bread. The original recipe called for challah bread. Recently I have had several recipes that call for either challah bread or brioche bread, but have had no look finding those breads. After trying 5 different stores I gave up. But really when it comes to french toast, you can use a variety of breads. I have used Italian bread when the store was out of French bread and even used Texas toast. I have also seen recipes that use good old sandwich bread. So for this recipe you can use whatever bread is your favorite for french toast, just make sure it is a few days old. You do not want to make this french toast with fresh bread, because it will be soggy.

Trés Leche French Toast

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf ( about 18 ounces) french bread
  • 2 cups half and half
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • whipped cream
  • fruit

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350º F. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Slice the loaf of bread into 1 inch thick slices.
  3. In a large bowl whisk together the half and half, heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla. Remove and reserve 1 3/4 cups of the milk mixture. Add the eggs to the remaining milk mixture in the large bowl. Whisk until the eggs are combined with the milk mixture.
  4. Dip each slice of bread into the egg and milk mixture and place in the prepared baking dish. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the bread is slightly golden brown. Allow to cool for 5 minutes.
  5. Warm the reserved milk mixture, about 30 seconds in the microwave should do it. Pour the warmed milk mixture evenly over the french toast and serve warm. Serve with whipped cream and berries, if desired, but I highly recommend it.
Enjoy!!!
