I really like making things from scratch, doing it the homemade way. So when I came across a recipe for making homemade hamburger buns I had to give it a try.
These are so much better than the store bought. They are firmer and held their shape better. They are also easy to make.
Homemade Hamburger Buns
Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water
- 3 tablespoons warm milk
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 eggs, beaten and divided
- 3 1/3 cups bread flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
Directions:
- In a small bowl combine warm water, warm milk, yeast and sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes or until foamy.
- In a large bowl combine the flour and salt.
- Add in the butter and rub it into the flour with your fingers until it forms crumbs.
- Mix in yeast and one egg. Knead until smooth and elastic, dough will be slightly sticky.
- Allow dough to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Divide into 8 equal pieces and form into a smooth balls. Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silpat. Cover loosely with plastic wrap sprayed with cooking spray and allow to rise for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 400º F.
- Brush the tops of the buns with the remaining beaten egg.
- Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes:
You can top the buns with either poppy seeds or sesame seeds after brushing with egg wash and before baking.
