When I was planning my holiday meals it dawned on me that with all theses homemade recipes floating around the internet, there is probably one for my favorite cranberry sauce. It turns out I was right and believe it or not it came from Ocean Spray.
What was even more interesting was the list of ingredients. I was not sure how it would jell up liked the canned variety. When I told me mom, she did not believe either. We both agreed it would thicken up, but not jell up.
But if Ocean Spray had it on their website, it was hoping it would work. When I took the lid of the container I was so excited to see that it actually worked, it jelled up like the canned variety. The only difference I noticed was how much better the homemade jellied sauce tasted. It was more tart and just all around better tasting.
Homemade Jellied Cranberry Sauce
Ingredients:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 12 ounces cranberries, frozen or fresh
Directions:
- In a medium saucepan combine the water and the sugar and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Add the cranberries and return the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and let the mixture gently boil for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Place a mesh strainer over a medium bowl or container. Pour the cranberry mixture into the strainer and mash with the back of a spoon. Frequently scrap the outside of the strainer and continue to mash until no pulp is left.
- Stir the contents of the bowl or container. Cover and let cool completely at room temperature. Refrigerate until cold and ready to serve.
