Baked Oven Fries

These fries are one of the better homemade versions I have made. I do not deep fry things so trying to get a nice and crispy french fry in the oven has not been easy. But these fries changed all that. They were nice and crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. The way a french fry should be. This will be my go to french fry recipe from now on.

Baked Oven Fries

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes
  • 5 tablespoons canola oil, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:

  1. Wash and cut potatoes into even sized fry like wedges.
  2. Place potatoes into a large mixing bowl and cover with hot water; soak for 10-30 minutes.
  3. Put 4 tablespoons of oil onto a heavy rimmed baking sheet. Spread the oil over the entire baking sheet with a basting brush.
  4. Sprinkle the pan with pepper. Set pan aside.
  5. Preheat oven to 475°.
  6. Drain the potatoes well and spread out on paper towels or clean kitchen towels. Pat the potatoes dry with additional towels.
  7. Wipe out the bowl the potatoes were soaked in so it is completely dry.
  8. Return the potatoes to the bowl and toss with remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Arrange the potatoes in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Cover the baking sheet tightly with foil and bake for 5 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and continue to bake until the bottoms of the potatoes are golden brown about 15-20 minutes. Rotate the baking sheet after 10 minutes.
  11. Flip the potatoes over keeping them in a single layer and continue to bake until the fries are golden and crispy about 5- 15 minutes. Rotate the pan as needed to ensure even browning.
