Orange Chicken

Orange Chicken

My husband is a fan of Chinese food, correction huge fan of, so I am always looking for Chinese type recipes to try at home. This recipe did not disappoint him. He loved it and is already wanting it again.

This chicken is not hard to make, however it does require some time. The chicken needs to be cooked in batches so that takes a bit of time. But it is well worth it. I served it over rice and it was super delicious and flavorful.

Orange Chicken

Ingredients:

Chicken

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1 1/2 inch cubes
  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 tablespoons olive oil (approximately)

Orange Sauce

  • 1 1/2 cups water, divided
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest, grated
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Directions:

  1. Combine flour and pepper in a large zip lock bag.
  2. Dip chicken in beaten egg and then put into zip lock bag with flour and shake to completely coat.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet and cook chicken in several batches for about 2-3 minutes per side or until completely cooked.
  4. Add 1-2 tablespoons olive oil before each batch as needed.
  5. While cooking chicken, in a large saucepan combine 1 1/4 cups water, orange juice, lemon juice, rice vinegar, and soy sauce.
  6. Stir to mix and cook over medium heat for 2 minutes.
  7. Stir in orange zest, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, and onion. Bring to a boil.
  8. Combine cornstarch with remaining 1/4 cup water mixing completely.
  9. Slowly stir cornstarch mixture into sauce.
  10. Mixture will thicken pretty quickly. Pour sauce over cooked chicken and garnish with green onions, if desired.
Enjoy!!!
